10 Global Internet Trends That Kiwis Loved

What makes something a trend and why do we love it so much?

Simple, humans love to copy each other in particular teenagers and twenty-somethings. With the growing popularity of social media platforms, trends can catch on and spread very quickly making them the newest and quite often crazy things to do. We've put together the 10 best (or craziest) Global Internet Trends that Kiwis loved.

1. Ice Bucket Challenge

The Ice Bucket Challenge, sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, is an activity involving the dumping of a bucket of ice and water over a person's head, either by another person or self-administered. Although this was intended to raise funds for a great charity, most people just did it for fun. You had to nominate three people to do it next.

2. Freckle Tattoos

This is a weird new beauty trend created by girls wanting to look like Meghan Markle. It involves adding pigments to your skin either permanently by visiting a cosmetic tattooist, similar to micro blading on your eyebrows. I'd recommend trying some makeup first as once its done there's no going back. People who have natural freckles will be rejoicing. 

3. Slime

Slime, slime everywhere. This gooey, sticky concoction is taking over the internet with its popularity. Kids and adults are going crazy for the stuff. With over 3 million posts about slime and how to make it, this is one of the most popular global trends.

4. Planking

And then there was planking also known as the lying down game. This has been around for a few years now but people still love it. Normally harmless unless people take it to extreme planking levels and do it somewhere very dangerous and stupid. The aim of the game is to ly perfectly still like a plank (board) and get your photo taken.

5. Cheeky Naked Butt Photos

The next Global trend is not for the faint-hearted, "Belfies" is the newest Instagram trend that is a bit cheeky, to say the least. People are snapping photos of themselves with their bare bums on show with beautiful scenery behind them. Not sure how long this trend will last. 

6. Naked team photos on top of men's shoulders

After the New Zealand mens won the sevens final in San Fransico a few weeks back and that photo got released on Instagram by Kurt Baker sitting naked on the shoulders of his fellow teammate, copycats all over have been doing the same. We'll see how long this trend lasts. At least he showered first...

7. Harlem Shake

The Harlem Shake has been around since 2013 and took the internet by storm. Most people will remember the 5 young lads in their bedroom dancing around to the Harlem Shake song, this went on to create countless other videos replicating the strange and entertaining dance moves. Most people in the videos dressed up for extra entertainment.

8. Mannequin Challenge 

The coolest trend sweeping social media is the Mannequin Challenge which people hold statuesque like poses in a cool setting. Celebrities have jumped on board with this including the likes of Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Ellen and numerous sporting stars to name a few. Even our All Blacks got onboard. 

9. Big Lips Challenge

Possibly the dumbest trend to hit social media is the Big Lips Challenge which was inspired by the likes of Kylie Jenner and her full pouting lips. People get a shot glass or small suction cup and put it over their lips. This has varying outcomes, none of them good. Videos are going viral of the disastrous aftermaths, including swelling and bruising of the lips. 

10. Condom Filled With Water Challenge

Possibly one of the more dangerous trends to fill our social media accounts, the condom filled with water challenge was inspired by two guys in Japan who filmed themselves dropping a filled condom over each others head. If done correctly it covers the whole head and you look like you are inside a fishbowl. Not the smartest thing to do with a choking hazard that is also filled with water.
