What's in a name?  Turns out everything when you are trying to name your unborn child. Couples spend 9 months deliberating over what to call their unborn baby. Longer still if you decide not to find out the sex of the baby. Yet some people have a boy's and girl's name picked out from childhood and others, like myself find it hard not to think of someone you know with the same name and instantly dismiss it.

How To Choose The Perfect NZ Baby Name in 2020

Traditional old family names are very much in fashion, like Jack, William, Ruby, Lilly and Charles (Charlie). Quite often named after Grandparents, this is a great safe option for most new parents.

If you like the idea of going with something unusual and unique, you may come up against parents who will disapprove and openly voice their concerns. My advice to this, don't tell them until the baby is born. No one says anything about your chosen name once the baby is born, well not to your face anyway.

You also have to consider initials and does it go with your surname, do you also give them a middle name. It can become quite overwhelming. But it doesn't have to, you have at least 8 months to come up with some options and trust me once the baby is born you kind of just know what name you should go with.

I have to admit finding myself pregnant with my fourth baby at the ripe old age of 38, I've found it harder this time around to choose names. I love my three boys names that we already have including their middle names, but am really struggling to love any name for my unborn surprise.

Do we go traditional or slightly unique?

I like to also say the full name out loud, as if you are shouting for your child across the park. If it sounds weird, maybe give it a miss.

I've put together a top list of boys and girls names for 2018 for some inspiration.
