We all know that sugar is bad for us, but many of us can’t imagine having our morning coffee or tea without a sweetener. In an effort to make a healthier choice, many of us turn to honey instead to add sweetness to our food and drink. But is New Zealand Manuka Honey Better Than Sugar better than sugar? It turns out that it is, and the reasons why may surprise you.

    Is honey better than sugar

    Is Honey Better Than Sugar

Although honey has more calories per sugar (64 calories per tablespoon for honey and 46 per tablespoon for sugar), honey is much sweeter than sugar. This is because honey has more fructose, while sugar is higher in glucose (fructose is sweeter than glucose). Because of this you won’t need as much of it to achieve your desired level of sweetness. This can actually cause you to consume fewer calories than you would if you used sugar. Eating fewer of these empty calories can help you lose or maintain your weight, which is known to be beneficial for your health.

Honey is also a source for several nutrients that are absent from sugar, meaning that honey is better than sugar from a nutritional standpoint. Honey contains trace amounts of vitamins C and B, potassium, copper, iron, and zinc, all of which are essential for your health. Honey is also a natural source of antioxidants, which are known to help prevent diseases caused by inflammation in the body, such as heart disease. Sugar lacks all of these benefits, largely because any beneficial vitamins and antioxidants present in sugar cane or beets are stripped during the refining process.

Raw, unpasteurized honey also contains small amounts of local pollens. If you eat locally produced honey, you consume small amounts of these pollens, which can help desensitize you to them. This can help you develop an immunity to allergic reactions caused by the pollens in your area. Sugar does not have the ability to help with allergies. Is honey better than sugar because of this? Ask yourself that question the next time a high pollen count makes your eyes itch and gives you a sneezing fit.

Honey can also be used for other purposes that sugar can’t be used for. If you have a cough or cold, eating food or drink laced with honey can help ease your symptoms. It is especially soothing for a sore throat. Because honey has antibacterial properties, it can also help your body fight off germs that lead to illness and infection. Honey can also be used in an emergency as a salve for minor cuts and burns. Before the invention of modern antibiotic ointments and creams, honey would be used to treat burns and abrasions. Because it is antimicrobial, honey may help promote the healing of these minor wounds.

We’ve answered the question: “Is honey better than sugar?” And, as you can see from the evidence, honey is better than sugar by a long shot. So, the next time you want add a little sweetness to your food, try reaching for a bottle of honey instead of the sugar jar.
